Taranto, the old Spartan colony of Tarentum, as a strategic city and port in southern Italy, has never ceased to be rich in history, culture and traditions. How Taranto, combine military training in Sparta Athenian art of entertainment? Taranto began as a home for unmarried women in Sparta and free men. The location was chosen by Sparta after consulting the oracle at Delphi. The merry dance in honor of the Greek god Dionysus became the source of the steps tarantella. Taranto flourished in an important place for trade at the time, during medieval times, and remains to this day.

During the century 17, the harvest was plagued suburban Taranto tarantulas, wolf spiders, while the Church banned the dance as a source of sin. The irritant injected by the Tarantulas apparently gave a lot of trouble and caused the victim (tarantato / tarantata) a trance. Doctors at the time, knowing the need for people for fun, prescribed Tarantella, a dance frenzied and delirious as the best treatment for tarantism.

Tarantella became popular when a girl, Miranda, developed a crush on a young farmer, Matteo, who was as handsome as he was shy. He went to see a Gypsy woman for help. The gypsy advised the couple to pretend to be beaten by a tarantula as an opportunity for young dance with her. The boy, who wants the girl to change, dropped a tarantula near Miranda, while the Both were working in the field. The tarantula little girl's foot. The girl went into a trance.
