The Poems: 1941-1950 (Collected Works of Langston Hughes, Vol 2) $5.16 Volume 2 includes the books Shakespeare in Harlem (1942), Jim Crow’s Last Stand (1943), Fields of Wonder (1947), and One-Way Ticket (1948). The Poems: 1951-1967 (Collected Works of Langston Hughes, Vol 3) $18.90 Volume 3 collects the poems of the last period of Hughes’s life. Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951) brilliantly fused the modernist dissonances of bebop jazz with his perception of Harlem life as both a triumph of hope and a potential crisis (”What happens to a dream deferred?”). In the tumultuous following years, he refused to relinquish the mantle of the poet, as may be seen in his inspired last… |

From the moment the shiny new book arrived at my door, I was excited to see what this incredible creation had reserved for my son and me. From the moment he opened the spine, I realized that it offers more than I expected.
Poetry speaks to children is a collection of poems and accompanied by an audio CD that contains many poems in the book, with most being read by the author. Even the voice of the famous Robert Frost makes an appearance to read his well-known "Stopping by Woods on a snowy evening." Each poem in the book with a theme matching the CD is marked with the track number, making listening very easy to your favorites.
The first thing I noticed was the incredible book illustrations by Judy Love, Wendy Rasmussen, and Paula Zinngrabe Wendland. These names may not mean much to most readers, but after seeing the pictures of the imagination come to life in full color on the pages of this book can give you pause enough to submit the names of these illustrators to memory. Each illustration reflects the heart and the admiration of the poems bound in poetry speaks of children.
The collection of poems, 95 in all, reflect the diversity of humanity, cultures and thoughts and feelings. Poetry Not only poetry is literature in its purest form. Poems by great figures such as Langston Hughes, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, share space with Playwrights historical novelists such as William Shakespeare and JRR Tolkien's epic. The best part of this collection is that children can enjoy a rich educational literature, learning about the beauty of poetry and the written word while having fun!
The recordings in the audio CD to add to the timelessness of poetry. Some of the poems were recorded for the first time to create the CD, resulting in crisp and beautiful poetic rhythms delivered by the author. Other items on the CD are of much greater recordings, such as reading Robert Frost. The varied sounds of the CD add to the feeling of old and new merging to make a classic for the generation younger.
Although my son, just 2 years old can not read the words, you can enjoy the imaginative artwork and poetry to music listening the CD. It also allows parents and children to join in a DVD or audio CD by itself can not.
Poetry speaks to children is the best option for a new addition to the collection of any avid reader of poetry. Better yet, is the perfect choice for introducing the beauty of poetry and the word spoken to anyone from any culture, young and old. Within the pages of the brilliant, wonderful book, poetry speaks to everyone in the family.
